The Midori Bonsai Club was founded in 1961 by a small group of individuals who were committed to learning both the art and science of bonsai. This is the cultivation and training of small trees in shallow containers that express the essence of age in the wild with each tree seeming to communicate a unique life story. The club has grown over the years, but has remained true to its founding purpose. It is about educating and developing the skills of its members while having fun in the process. (Read detailed Club history here.)

Monthly club meetings are held on the first Thursday evening of each month beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Social Hall of St. Edwards Episcopal Church, 15040 Union Ave, San Jose CA. (Map) There is also a monthly hands-on workshop session held on the third Thursday evening of each month beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the same location.

A description of our various club activities and their objectives follows:

Club meetings are held on the first Thursday evening of each month. They generally include a presentation on a bonsai-related topic, sharing of best practices, and structured exchanges of information on selected bonsai trees presented by members. Raffles and auctions occur regularly. Bonsai resources in the form of materials and a club library are also available. Our goal is to educate club members in the art and science of bonsai in a fun environment that encourages learning.

Club workshops are held on the third Thursday evening of each month. These sessions enable members to learn, practice and develop hands-on skills in applying bonsai care and styling techniques. This social setting encourages skill growth through personal coaching and the demonstration of best practices. Club members also build a sense of community through a variety of one-to-one interactions.

The annual club show is an opportunity for members to learn how to prepare for and present trees in a show environment. It is also an opportunity for club members to showcase their trees, skills and general expertise to the greater bonsai community in the region.

A variety of other fun and educational club activities including bonsai garden tours, collecting excursions and convention outings occur periodically throughout the year.
