new year’s resolutions & setting goals

New Year’s Resolutions can seem a little quaint, and maybe even embarrassing. We reflect on another year come and gone (and in this case, half a decade), and are forced to grimly consider our optimistic delusions from yesteryear like the wilted bag of spinach in the crisper from the last trip to the grocery store (I swear I was going to make that curry!). I am haunted by my first bonsai casualty, a maple, my first bonsai ghost of Christmas past :(

Yet, I firmly believe in these resolutions. For all my mistakes and accumulated learnings, the goal I had set to put something, anything, in 2025’s Midori Bonsai Show gave me the optimistic delusion to turn my scraggly sugi into something resembling a bonsai. I more actively put my notes into practice, documented the tree’s progress, and identified gaps in my knowledge. The tree still needs much work, but the fact that I have moved slightly forward in my bonsai journey has given me much needed joy and confidence to continue setting new goals and continue failing forward :)

I hope you will join me in contemplating how you would like to see your 2026.
