President’s Message
February 2026
Wow! With this warm weather, spring is coming in fast.
Some of my trees are already breaking dormancy, and keeping up with repotting has become a real challenge. With everything waking up early, it’s important that we stay extra vigilant. Pay close attention to watering—trees can dry out quickly once buds start moving—and keep an eye out for those pesky bugs and critters that love tender new growth.
Like most things in life, the good arrives right alongside the bad. Early bud break can be tricky, but the upside is that the plum blossoms are already starting to show. That little burst of color gives us hope that the cold winter days are finally on their way out, and I’m definitely ready for that.
First Thursday Meeting
We’re in for a treat this month. Elliott Cooper‑Balis will be leading one of my favorite programs: the Tree Improvement Program. This is your chance to bring in a tree or two from your collection, share your vision for it, and get thoughtful suggestions on how to move it forward.
If it were me, I’d bring one tree that’s more advanced and another that’s still early in development. That way you can get guidance on both ends of the spectrum. And if you have a tree you’ve held onto for years but never quite knew what to do with—this is exactly the time to bring it in.
When you come, be ready with your questions. Style, health, planting angle, preferred front—these are all great topics. And be prepared to answer a few questions yourself:
• What makes this tree special to you
• Why you bought it
• How tall you envision it
• What direction you hope to take it
I can’t wait to see what you bring and to hear Elliott’s insights.
Third Thursday Workshop
Our Third Thursday Workshop is the perfect follow‑up to the Tree Improvement Program. Bring your trees, soil, and pots, and get hands‑on help with repotting. This is a great opportunity to apply the feedback you received earlier in the month and set your trees up in the best possible pot—whether for development or for show.
So pack up your trees, grab your tools, and bring a smile. We’ll be playing in the dirt together, and that’s always a good time.
