Editor’s Notes
keeping an eye out for natural inspiration
Much like birding, bonsai has given me the unexpected benefit of enriching travel. Whenever I visit a National Park or State Park these days, I scan the environment for trees that exude a unique aura. It is especially helpful to study the trees in their natural environment, as I better absorb exactly what natural forces shape the appearance of a tree: how its location in a valley limits sunlight, or on a ridge exposes it to high winds, and more. In bonsai, we attempt to recreate and tell our own stories, but it is just as enjoyable to “read” these stories in nature.
