Here we are in August already; the hot days of summer will start to fade, and fall will begin to show its head with cooler days. Here’s what’s ahead for us as we get ready for our October show.

I love this time of year. June through mid-August is one of the busiest, most productive, and impactful times for working on trees. Yes, it is a little hot and unpleasant out in the sun, but it’s the core growing time for the trees.

With July now upon us, our Midori yearly bonsai show is just a few months away. Friends, now is the time to sort through your collection of trees and determine what you plan to put in our show this year.

The Summer Solstice was June 20—the longest day of the year and the height of the growing season. It’s a great time for summer bonsai activities.

There are some fascinating events coming up in the bonsai world, two of which relate to bonsai pots!

The month of June is an exciting time for us bonsai enthusiasts, as our trees are now putting on all their new green growth, allowing us to cut back and shape them into a more refined form.

The days are getting longer and warmer, and the sun angle has been increasing, so we need to get into watering mode now, as the growing season is in full swing. My shade cloth is up and operating!

April means the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and with that, our annual bonsai show will once again take place at the Quinlan Community Center in Cupertino.

This spring the weather has been all over the place. It obviously can’t make up its mind. However my trees are pushing ahead with gusto.

Over the years, no one has been more reliable than Bob Shimon of Mendocino Coast Bonsai as a vendor of collected bonsai trees and pots at all our shows. Bob will be sharing with us a Mendocino Pygmy Cypress first Thursday evening.

The rainy season has been spotty so far, with intense downpours and long dry periods. We’ll see how it pans out going forward.
